Life has many ups and downs. As time passes, we are granted wisdom and strength. Going through puberty was bad enough; imagine coupling the pains of being a teenager with those of learning about your newly acquired super-powered abilities. Sure, it sounds like a blessing or a silver platter, to some it could be, but for some it could be a nightmare, as not all people in this world have the strength, will power or morals to handle such powers.
“With great power comes great responsibility,” says Peter quietly to himself, remembering the last words his Uncle Ben spoke to him.
So what does make a super-powered person a hero? Most would say it is the hero’s powers that make him ‘heroic’. Although true to a point, I will disagree. Not all beings who have received gifts of great power and super abilities become heroes. There are those who succumbed to the darker, more evil beings that reside in all of us and allow false feelings of righteousness misguide our paths.
Though he never knew his father as well as his mother, Peter Parker turned out to be a well-mannered and polite young man. In school, Peter was ridiculed and laughed at to the point of embarrassment numerous times, though he never sought revenge. Even after he became the “friendly neighborhood Spider Man,” Peter was not vengeful. Imagine the temptation of being able to get away with murder or robbing a bank and being powerful enough to escape the consequences, now imagine having the will power, restraint and mental fortitude to always make the right decision.
Peter faced many adversaries as Spider Man and has overcome many struggles throughout his life. From not knowing his parents, to dealing with the untimely death of his beloved Uncle Ben, to being ridiculed in school for being too much of a ‘geek’ or ‘nerd’, it is no wonder that brilliant young Peter is also known as the “Amazing” or “Spectacular” Spider Man.
Not all persons who obtain special abilities or powers put them to use for the greater good. There are those people whom think of only themselves when they commit dirty deeds and violent acts, instead of who may be affected by the damage or loss created. Our friendly Spider Man is pretty selfless as he lives a fairly humble existence. Peter Parker works a regular full-time job during the week, lives in a very modest apartment and usually relies on public transportation to get around the city.
There is a hero inside all human beings. Though some choose to keep their inner hero locked away, most let their heroism shine through. No matter how trivial a good deed may seem, whether it be helping an elderly lady put groceries in her car or even returning a found wallet with all the contents intact, doing the right thing, the heroic thing, can be very rewarding.
